Mint Sunrise Skincare Kit
This Mint Sunrise Skincare Kit is by far my favorite Hyla creation and will definitely remain in the skincare line after this season. Mint Sunrise is a 100% essential oil blend of peppermint, orange, vanilla, and clove. This blend was created with summer in mind: all of the mint family members thrive during the summer time. Though peppermint gets most of its attention during the winter months, it is a great addition to the summer garden[, though some gardners stir away because of mint’s invasive tendencies].
“Mint Sunrise is a 100% essential oil blend of
peppermint, orange, vanilla, and clove.”
I have been using this skincare kit for over a month and my breakouts have decreased 100%! My skin is not only clear, but firm and smooth. When investigating oils for this blend, clove and vanilla were highlighted for their “collagen boosting” properties. This contributes to the reduction of age lines and the firmness of the skin. Clove is also known for preventing acne, and diminishing skin spots. Other reviews rave about the spot reducing properties that are matched to that of the Vitamin E Cream. Vanilla, orange, and clove essential oils aid in this effort. Mint family members are known to help reduce free radicals, which reduce signs of aging and keep the skin hydrated and healthy.
The bases for the skincare kit are standard for our line. The toner is a mixture of witch hazel, aloe-vera water, and vitamin e oil. Both main organic bases (witch hazel & aloe water) are mixed in 2:1 ratio. Essential oils and this toner base do not blend well permanently. It is important that the user shake the product well before use for equal application. The toner is my favorite part of the skin care regimen. We use the toner to help remove excess dirt, dust, and dead skin-cells from the face, allowing for better hygiene and clearer skin. The toner should be used in the morning and at night after cleansing/washing the face.
The Mint Sunrise Facial Oil is a mixture of sweet almond, jojoba oil, and vitamin e oil. Almond oil is great for skin and body care. Almond oil so closely mimics the natural oils the body already produces. This allows for great absorption that keeps the skin from becoming oily and muggy. Almond oil and jojoba oil are great sources of vitamin e and there is some added to the mixture as well. This adds to the healing properties of this line: your skin will literally eat this product up!

The facial cream in this set is made with shea butter, sweet almond oil, and vitamin e oil. This cream is my favorite Hyla cream option so far! It is the perfect ratio of butter to oil. This cream leaves ZERO residue when kept at non-melting point temperatures. This cream is a bit thicker than the vitamin e skincare cream, which is great for eczema and other harsh skincare needs.
“This routine has been a great method to keep my skin
clear and healthy for the summer months.
I promise you will enjoy Mint Sunrise!”
All of the mixtures in this bunch include clove and peppermint, which are great exfoliators and can be irritating to sensitive skin. Be sure to try this mixture on a small patch of skin if you have any sensitive skincare needs or concerns. It is much easier to stay hydrated skinwise in the summer time and this should be considered in your skincare routine. I have modified the routine to toner and oil in the morning with toner and cream combination in the evening. This has been a great method to keep my skin clear and healthy for the summer months. I promise you will enjoy Mint Sunrise!
Vitamin E Benefits
Vitamin E is found naturally in our bodies and in many oils, creams, and butters. Many of Hyla’s go-to carrier oils have vitamin E healing properties: sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, and shea butter. The oil in the Hyla Vitamin Kit brings together simple products to allow nature to its work. The Vitamin E Oil is not only great for moisturizing, but as a makeup remover as well!
When using any new skincare product, it is best to try the oil or cream in a small test area and watch for breakouts. Vitamin E Oil is great for daily skin care, but do not use on open wounds or parts of the skin that may hold an infection. There is a low chance of vitamin E overdose from topical use.
Symptoms of an overdose or vitamin e side effects can include the following: abdominal pain, more than the normal amount of abdominal gas, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, weakness, headaches, blurred vision, and internal bleeding due to depress blood coagulation if the overdose has been occurring over a long term.
Nowruz
Nowruz is a celebration of Spring, the exact moment of the Equinox and the inspiration for our Spring 2021 Hyla Scents Collection. The candle of the Spring Collection named for the Holiday is our personally crafted essential oil blend of Clary Sage and Lemongrass. Clary Sage is a favorite among the essential oil users, and is held in high esteem by those in the spiritual community. These groups say sage is great for meditation purposes and lift the spirit. Lemongrass, also known as Melissa, is known for boosting energy and promotes balance.
The Nowruz celebration is a descendant of the Nation of Persia and has celebrated over several countries that once shared their influence (or colonization) with over 90 million people celebrating every year. Some of the countries include Iran, Iraqi, Georgia, China, Armenia, and the United States, which recognized Nowruz as an international holiday in 2010. This decision was followed by Canada who made this step the year before. Since this celebration is recognized all over the world, there are many different ways to celebrate and even spell this holiday. One of the most recognized/ familiar spelling is Nowruz, which in Farsi means New Day. In many cultures, this is also the first day of the New Year and requires a lot of preparation.
The celebrations start with khoone takoonee (shaking of the house). This is like a Spring Cleaning, except far more intense. The celebrators clean out every room and inch of their homes. Some even removing rugs, mattresses, and clothing outside to be cleansed by the Sun. After the cleaning, it is time to set the Soferye Haft Seen which means “New Year’s Table” which is adorned with flowers and items that are called the seven “S”s: seeb (apples), senjed (dried oleaster berries), seer (garlic), samanu (wheat pudding) or sabzeh (wheat-grass), somaq (sumac) , and sheereenee (sweets). Apples represent health and beauty and garlic the cleansing that comes with the new year for the body and environment. Wheat represents justice and strength, somaq for patience, and serkeh for age and patience. It is common to have visitors come by and celebrate right at the Spring Equinox, whether it is 5:00 AM or 12:00 noon, therefore, sheereenee are always great to keep for your guest. The Other items include books with money, candles, and tokhme morgh (egg) to represent fertility and are decorated, ayne (mirror) for reflection of the past year. There is legend in some cultures that when the equinx hits and the light and dark are equal, the egg will rotate on the mirror placed on the Soferye Haft Seen.
Once the house is clean, the table is set, the egg changes direction with the New year, the 13 days of celebration begin. In many cultures, the first day of celebration is spent at the oldest member of the family’s house, where they host. This is then passed along by age in descending order until the 13 days are celebrated. Some cultures believe that 13 is an unlucky number, so they choose to gather outside in large community groups. On the 13th day, it customary to tie knots in the blades of the wheat-grass and make a wish. After the wishing is complete, you throw the sabzeh in a body of moving water in hopes that your wishes will come true.

The Nightengale’s Song
Legend tells of a great Emperor of China who was said to have been birthed from the stars. One day, this same Emperor heard word of a beautiful singing Nightingale and demanded to have the bird in the court immediately. The Nightingale heard of the great request and agreed to an audience with Emperor, staying for some time. The Nightingale not only became great friends with the Emperor but was the honored performer for many of the court’s visitors and traveling governing officials. Out of gratitude, a traveling guest of the Emperor sent a mechanical bird with a beautiful song that captivated the Emperor. Soon, completely occupied by his mechanical gift, the Emperor lost interest in his friend and the Nightingale took flight, moving back to the forest.
Weeks, months went by and suddenly the toy bird died, never to sing again. None of the emperor’s great engineers could fix the mechanical bird and, for the first time, the Emperor took notice that his friend the Nightingale had left. The realization of how the great ruler had treated his friend the Nightingale came later and brought the Emperor into a deep, sickening depression. Unable to eat, sleep, or rule, China was sure their leader would expire right before their eyes. The Nightingale heard of the sadness killing the Emperor and went to sing for their old friend. Hardly able to believe his ears, the Emperor was filled with so much gratitude to see his friend again. Almost instantly, the Emperor was brought back to good health and was able to continue ruling the great country of China with his friend by his side.
Gifts and presents are often the main focus of the Yule season, but there are gifts that are more precious than any material good that comes. This Nightingale scent is a blend of cinnamon bark and lavender. Lavender inhalation promotes general relaxation, calmness, and eases insomnia. Cinnamon bark is known to enhance these qualities with an added acclaim of sparking inspiration.
As we use the Yule-Tide season to reflect and take care of self, let us also remember to treasure those who inspire us and deserve to know how much they mean to us. The Nightingale scent is a reminder of this great lesson of friendship and its value. However, unlike the Emperor, not all stories are destined for a happy ending. Take note of those special people in your life and make sure they know this Yule-Tide season that they can never be replaced. Allow this blend to inspire you to show those you treasure what they mean to you.
Demeter’s Perfume
The Yule-Tide season is told to be born out of tragedy itself. Persephone, the demigod, ate from the fruit of the underworld, allowing her to return to live with Hades, gaining half of his kingdom and immortal life in exchange for love and company part of the year.
Persephone’s mother Demeter, being The Great Mother, would suffer with her and plummet into a horrid depression causing the cold spell of the Yule-Tide Season; the needed death cycle for the healthy growing seasons ahead. Persephone yearned to soften the long, depressing winter suffered by her mother. So, she left her mother a perfume to soften her pain and bring them close when worlds apart.
Demeter's Perfume is a soft, familiar mixture of frankincense and myrrh. This combination is known to help remove bacteria from the air and kill unwanted molds. Frankincense is known to ease tensions by aiding in lower heart rate and in relieving blood pressure. Hyla shared this scent in hope that it will help chase away the bleakness of winter while purifying the air around you, welcoming the needed transition for a healthy growing season.
*************************************
I asked Persephone,
“How could you grow to love him? He took you from flowers to a kingdom where not a single living thing can grow”
Persephone smiled,
“My darling, every flower on your earth withers. What Hades gave me was a crown made for the immortal flowers in my bones.”
Seven Sisters
The legend of the Seven Sisters shows up in many different cultures: Hindi, Greek, Aboriginal Australians, Hebrew, and more. In all the legends, there is a tie to the stars and usually the star cluster the Pleiades. The Pleiades is best seen in North America during the late November months and leaves sight towards early April. More than 430 light-years from Earth in the Taurus portion of the sky, the Pleiades is a cluster of more than 500 stars, but only seven are visible with a naked eye, the sisters.
Maia, Electra, Alcyone, Taygete, Asterope, Celaeno, and Merope: They are the children of Pleione, goddess of the sailors, and Atlas, the Titan given the task of holding up the Earth in some myths. In other myths, Zeus is proclaimed their father. In one version of the story, Oran is said to have so animatedly pursued the seven sisters that Zeus turned the seven sisters into doves who later transcended into stars. Another version of their story leads the sisters’ group suicide after learning their fate of their father to hold the world and were placed in the by Zeus, who felt he had inflicted this pain. Native traditions claim the sisters were always stars where, on their first visit to Earth, one sister was nearly captured and forced into marriage.
Like the story of the Seven Sisters, not all stories seem fair, but there is always beauty to be found. The Seven Sisters scent was created on the wings of reflection, in the walls of forced stillness, through feelings saudade and longing that is much heavier and closer in the Yule-Tide season. This scent, the Seven Sisters is infused with lavender oil, a common favorite, and a wonderful healer, bringing relief to insomnia, fatigue, stress, and fear. These healing properties are naturally enhanced by its partner in this blend, chamomile. The lingering note in this blend is the scent of rose. Rose also adds to the release of anxiety, resulting in the true gift of relaxation.

The aromas of this scent are a homage to a friend, gone from the body,
but forever imprinted on my soul.
The Yule-Tide season reminds us all that dies is recycled.

There’s Always the Mistletoe
The chilling, brisk winds of the Yule-Tide season will go well with this Mistletoe. The sweet notes of vanilla and frankincense are matched with the refreshing aroma of peppermint to lift the holiday spirit and clear the sinuses. As the world begins to slow around us, frankincense will help you ease into hibernation by helping lower your heart rate and aid in relieving blood pressure.
As for the mistletoe, it has ancient roots. This ancient relic was thought to bring peace among enemies and halts to wars. In good company with the acclaimed aphrodisiac vanilla, the Yule mistletoe is also known to bring fertility to desiring couples. Vanilla is also praised for its ability to relieve depression and as an antioxidant.
Though there are coldness and grief throughout the world, there is also the Mistletoe.
So, as they say… kiss her once for me!

The Lessons of the Platypus

During the winter season, we can lose up to four hours of sunlight a day; that is twenty-eight hours of extra darkness a week. The stillness and general lack of sunlight during this Yule-Tide season can lead to Seasonal Affective Disorder [SAD].
It is easy to get wrapped up in the natural reflection that occurs during the season, but it is also important to consider self-care. SAD can be produced when the lack of sunlight from the shorter winter days knock off the body’s circadian rhythm, producing chemicals that can make us lethargic, throws off our sleeping patterns, chemically changing our moods, and cause over-eating.
Platypus Venom is given its bold fragrance from a lavender and tea tree oil blend. Lavender oil has been illuminated for its added benefit in relaxation and in countering fatigue and insomnia. Lavender inhalation also attributes to the release of stress and the calming of fear-tided emotions. Lavender’s partner in this blend, tea tree oil, helps with nasal irritation, cold relief, and can even ease a winter cough. Tea tree oil also helps rid of toxins and germs from the air that the holiday season often brings- truly allowing for the relaxation you need.
The lesson of the Platypus this season is self-care. Dealing with the joy, grief, family, depression, and excitement of the Holiday Season all requires self-love and being present -despite the sometimes lonely elements that come a long winter season. Allow our strongest scent to soothe you and yours into any holiday season.
