Demeter’s Perfume

The Yule-Tide season is told to be born out of tragedy itself. Persephone, the demigod, ate from the fruit of the underworld, allowing her to return to live with Hades, gaining half of his kingdom and immortal life in exchange for love and company part of the year.

Persephone’s mother Demeter, being The Great Mother, would suffer with her and plummet into a horrid depression causing the cold spell of the Yule-Tide Season; the needed death cycle for the healthy growing seasons ahead. Persephone yearned to soften the long, depressing winter suffered by her mother. So, she left her mother a perfume to soften her pain and bring them close when worlds apart.

Demeter's Perfume is a soft, familiar mixture of frankincense and myrrh. This combination is known to help remove bacteria from the air and kill unwanted molds. Frankincense is known to ease tensions by aiding in lower heart rate and in relieving blood pressure. Hyla shared this scent in hope that it will help chase away the bleakness of winter while purifying the air around you, welcoming the needed transition for a healthy growing season.

I asked Persephone,

“How could you grow to love him? He took you from flowers to a kingdom where not a single living thing can grow”

Persephone smiled,

“My darling, every flower on your earth withers. What Hades gave me was a crown made for the immortal flowers in my bones.”

Persephone’s Decent

Mother, you don’t understand

I made Hades run to me

He saw my new bone beneath

And offered me half his kingdom

Do you really think I ate unwillingly?
